Wildlife / Pictorial
Carried on the Wind Carried on the Wind is a collection of paintings and pencil works depicting the wildlife of southern Africa. It is not a journal or an exhibition of art; it is simply a reflection of an artist’s memoirs reaching back over half a century. It is the wish of the author to allow the reader, whether he or she has had the privilege of visiting our shores, to share in the marvels that this exquisite continent has to offer and gain a deeper understanding of the life that it carries.
.
Carried on the Wind Andrew Bone is a true child of Africa, born and raised in Rhodesia, educated at a rural school and fought in a bloody civil war. With the cessation of hostilities and the birth of Zimbabwe, he found himself, as did many of his companions, frustrated and directionless with the onset of peace. As unappealing as civilian life appeared so did the idea of leaving his beloved continent for which so many had sacrificed their lives. In the military there was comradeship, a sense of purpose, discipline and respect that was earned. Suburbia offered safety, drudgery and frustration. Redemption came unexpectedly in the form of an invitation to canoe the great Zambezi. Once again Andrew could feel the sun on his shoulders and listen to the nightjars with the stars above. Manoeuvring between hippo pods and sandbars, watching armour-plated crocodiles slide off the banks and troops of baboons chatter from overhanging acacias, Andrew felt a contentment that had been denied to him since being demobbed. He exchanged an alarm clock and suit for the dawn chorus and T-shirt and shorts.
After a few seasons guiding in the Zambezi valley, he accepted a position on a private game reserve. He married and began sketching and painting in the evenings when there were no clients to entertain. In a leap of faith Andrew and Kelly decided to concentrate on art and supplement their income with request trips to the valley. Behind his easel Andrew constantly experimented with techniques, always keeping the reality of the wilds and its inhabitants as his guide. Whenever possible he would escape to the bush either on photographic safaris or assisting with conservation efforts. Collectors appreciated the close connection between the reality of his subjects and the individual style of his brush strokes.
Although there was a great deal of interest from clients in Zimbabwe and South Africa, Andrew knew that the international market was his target, and for several years attended exhibitions and shows in the US. His efforts and faith in his work finally caught the eye of Park West Gallery, the largest art marketing company in the world. He continues to exhibit throughout the world with Park West where his work is eagerly sought by collectors. Andrew, Kelly and their three daughters relocated to South Africa where he continues to show his art internationally and is deeply involved with conservation, having created the Forever Wild Foundation.
